V-PLOYMENT FAQ

Does V-Ployment create a separate boot image file for every ESX server configured?

No - A single ESX boot image file (.iso) is created with all the configured server jobs inside, when the "Create" action is clicked on the V-Ployment application

This single image can then be mounted on each server (locally or remotely via virtual media) and the operator simply types in the server name to be built as displayed

How many servers can I configure in a single V-Ployment job?

You can configure as many ESX servers as you wish in a single job (boot image)

We recommend that you limit the number of servers and create separate boot images for your individual server bases

What is the difference between V-Ployment and other commercial products such as Altiris, BladeLogic, IBM Director etc?

Existing ESX deployment products do the “Pre” configuration only, although they provide some very basic examples of “Post” scripts, these have to be fully developed which requires skilled development resource which often proves expensive and time consuming, is difficult to support and requires more time and effort on your part for future releases. V-Ployment “Out of the box” provides a fully developed, supported configuration for ESX 3.x and will also be certified for future ESX versions.

Where should I install my ESX installation source media and ESX update repository?

If you have an FTP or HTTP server accessible on the Service Console network, this will suffice. We recommend using the VirtualCenter server for this, as it is already on the correct network running a web server

Where should I install the V-Ployment application?

V-Ployment can be installed on any Windows machine that has access to the extracted ESX source code (either on disk or CD). If multiple people are going to need access to configure and run ESX builds using V-Ployment then the VirtualCenter server is the ideal place to install it. Within your testing infrastructure, ESX build images can be created for any of your ESX environments from a single instance of V-Ployment.
